TPK Fields 3 Teams for The 2010 Labatt Blue Pond Hockey Championships
Terry's Plumbing Krew fielded 3 teams for the annual 2010 Labatt Blue Pond Hockey Championships held in Eagle River, Wisconsin. The Krew made this long cross-country journey for the second year in a row and represented Pittsburgh area adult league hockey players quite well...
The boys returned home with an overrall record of 11 wins and 2 losses between the 3 teams, having one team (Krew 3) go the distance and win the championship for their division!
Krew 1 was a team entered at the 21+ Intermediate level and consisted of Alex Kumnik, Greg Kumnik, Jason Mertz, Chris Vendilli, and Joe Perry. Krew 1 had a regular tournament record of 3 wins and 0 losses which qualified the team as a 3rd overrall seed for the playoffs, and 1st seed for their divisional pool. Krew 1 suffered a loss during their first quarterfinal playoff game at the hands of a team from Chicago, which they had beaten during game 2 of regular tournament play! Undeterred Krew 1 took to the sidelines to enjoy ice cold Labatt Blue and cheer on the remaining team... (Krew 3).
Krew 2 was a team consisting of Ed Haubach, Jerry Kopinski, Mike Velette, George Dorow, Tommy McAllister, and Gene "The Animal" Stuthers. Krew 2 was entered into the 40+ Tier II division and had a regular tournament record of 2 wins 1 loss, narrowly missing the playoffs by a one goal differential.
The third and final Krew team, Krew 3, made a strong showing exceeding everyone's expectations for a "bunch of plumbers" from Pittsburgh. Seeing as how most Pittsburgh natives grow up playing on smooth indoor ice arenas with the luxury of Zamboni's and climate controlled environments, most of the local teams and those others from area such as Minnesota, Canada, and Chicago, expected a poor showing from inexperienced pond hockey players such as the Krew. Little did they know that Krew 3 was Danny Klinefelter's all-star roster who spent time practicing on makeshift ponds in Hampton Township and having late night meetings to discuss pond hockey strategy ever since the 2009 Championship tournament. The smack-talking stopped when Krew boys kept sliding pucks into the net one after another...
The 2010 National Champions, Krew 3, made up of Tommy Holland, Brian Fuller, Billy Graham, Jame DeWeese, Dan Klinefelter, and Don Cridge skated to 6 wins 0 losses throughout the entire tournament. Their success was not met without much resistance, however, and during one semi-final game Krew 3 had to go to triple overtime to secure their position in the championship match!
For a bunch of Plumbers from Pittsburgh Terry's Plumbing Krew made a great showing. An overrall record of 11 wins and 2 losses was second to none throughout the tournament and TPK was the talk of Eagle River, Wisconsin this weekend. Congratulation to Krew 3 for becoming the 2010 National Pond Hockey Champions in the 30+ Bronze Division.
